What's in the worksheet

12 items, 20 points - Part A: choose the word, 8 items (16 points), e.g. ___ is an apple. (a boy holding an apple), ___ is a kite. (a boy pointing at a kite in the sky), ___ are stars. - Part A key: This, That, These, Those, This, That, These, Those - Part B: choose the correct sentence, 4 items (4 points); distractors break agreement, e.g. These is a pencil., This are flowers., That are cars. - Part B key: This is a pencil., That is a bird., These are flowers., Those are cars.

How to use it in class

Use as the first sheet after teaching this / that / these / those with real objects. Allow about 15 minutes. - Before starting, hold one pen and point to one far away, then hold several and point to a far pile, with children echoing This is... / That is... / These are... / Those are... - During Part A, have children check whether the child in the picture is holding the thing (near) or pointing at it (far); afterwards move on to the fill-in sheet

Common sticking points

- Items 2 and 6: choosing This because the child is pointing, missing that the thing is far away - Part B: choosing These is a pencil. or This are flowers. by looking only at the first word, not at is / are - Item 4, balloons outside the window: choosing These because the girl stands close to the glass - Part B item 4: choosing These are cars., which is grammatical, though the key gives Those
