Teaching guide

What children will practise

Order three cards into subject + am/is/are + adjective or noun sentences, then check agreement by picking the correct sentence.

What's in the worksheet

12 items, 20 points - Part A: order the cards and write the sentence, 8 items (16 points), e.g. happy / am / I, is / She / a student, are / tired / They, kind / You / are - Part A key: I am happy., She is a student., We are friends., He is tall., They are tired., It is a cat., You are kind., I am ready. - Part B: choose the correct sentence from three, 4 items (4 points), e.g. He are tall. / He is tall. / He am tall. - A separate key writes the sentences in red and circles the answers

How to use it in class

Use as the last sheet of the verb to be set, after the choose and fill sheets. Allow about 15 minutes. - Before starting, have children find the capitalised card in each item first (I, She, We, He, They, It, You), as it always comes first - After marking, ask children to make three cards about themselves or a friend, e.g. hungry / am / I, and swap with a partner to order

Common sticking points

- Items 2 and 4: building the questions Is she a student? or Is he tall? because the is card comes first, which clashes with the capitalised subject card - Item 6: placing a cat before is, as in It a cat is - Part B: choosing It are a cat. or We is friends. by spotting is or are without checking the subject - Leaving out the full stop, as the cards have none
