Curriculum indicators practised
Before you begin
Sort everyday rubbish into three bins: paper, plastic and food or garden waste.
10 questions, 10 points - Circle the correct one of three bins for each item; the header shows blue (paper), yellow (plastic) and green (food and garden waste) bins - Food and garden waste: banana peel, apple core, dry leaves and eggshells - Plastic: a water bottle, a clear plastic tub and a straw / Paper: a newspaper, a cardboard box and a notebook - The answer key marks the correct bin for every item
Use before starting a classroom recycling scheme. Allow about 10-15 minutes. - Before starting, check which colours the school's own bins use for each type, as they may not match the sheet - After marking, let children inspect the classroom bin and count how many items are in the wrong place
- Item 8 (dry leaves): children avoid the 'wet waste' bin because 'dry' seems to contradict 'wet'; explain that wet waste means waste that rots - Item 10 (eggshells): choosing another bin because shells are hard and not wet - Item 6 (cardboard box): choosing plastic because they connect 'box' with the plastic tub in item 4
