A look before you play
A few real prompts from the game to help you choose an activity for your class.
Ones: eight plus five is thirteen - write three, carry one. Tens: two plus one plus the carry makes four.
Seven plus six is thirteen - write three, carry one. Four plus two plus one makes seven.
Nine plus nine is eighteen - write eight, carry one. Three plus one plus one makes five.
Before you play
Add two-digit numbers where the ones make more than 9, carrying one ten into the tens column, and choose the correct total. Extends indicator ค 1.1 ป.2/4 on adding whole numbers up to 1,000.
6 multiple-choice questions, every one needs a carry - 28 + 15 = ? answer 43, with 33 as the forgot-to-carry option - 39 + 19 = ? where the ones make 9 + 9 = 18 - 18 + 18 = ? double 18, answer 36 - 65 + 25 = ? the ones make exactly 10, answer 90
Play after teaching carrying with base-ten blocks, about 8 minutes. Team mode works well: each team writes the sum in columns on scrap paper before answering. - After a question many get wrong, ask "What do the ones make? Is it more than ten? Where does the carried ten go?" - 65 + 25 is a good one to discuss: the ones digit is 0, but there is still a carry - Play it linked to the class so scores go into the mark book, and compare with the no-carrying set to see who is stuck on carrying itself
- Forgetting to carry, e.g. choosing 33 for 28 + 15 or 73 for 56 + 27. Have pupils write a small carried 1 above the tens every time - In 65 + 25, choosing 80 or 95 because they are unsure what to write when the ones make 10. Use base-ten blocks to swap 10 ones for 1 ten - In 39 + 19, choosing 68 by carrying twice. Check that only one ten was carried
