Sample questions

A few real prompts from the game to help you choose an activity for your class.

  1. Sort the things by the unit you would measure them in.

    Sort into

    • measured in centimetres
    • measured in metres
    • a pencil
    • the height of a room
    • an eraser
    • the length of a football pitch
    Read the explanation

Small things are measured in centimetres; large things and long distances in metres.

  2. Sort the numbers into groups.

    Sort into

    • less than 50
    • more than 50
    • 23
    • 78
    • 41
    • 95
    Read the explanation

Compare each with fifty - below goes in the first group, above in the second.

  3. Sort the answers into groups.

    Sort into

    • the answer is even
    • the answer is odd
    • 2 × 5
    • 3 + 4
    • 6 + 6
    • 5 + 4
    Read the explanation

Work out the answer first, then look at the ones digit to see if it is even or odd.

What children will practise

Choose a sensible unit: centimetres or metres for length (indicator ค 2.1 ป.2/2), grams or kilograms for weight (ค 2.1 ป.2/4), with review of comparing to 50 and odd or even answers.

What's in the worksheet

4 sorting questions with 2 boxes each - A pencil and an eraser in centimetres; the height of a room and a football pitch in metres - 23 and 41 are less than 50; 78 and 95 are more - 2 × 5 and 6 + 6 give even answers; 3 + 4 and 5 + 4 give odd ones - One biscuit and a pen in grams; a large sack of rice and a student in kilograms

How to use it in class

Use to close a measurement lesson, about 6 minutes. In team mode, ask each team to explain one choice. - Beforehand, have pupils look at 1 cm on a ruler and stretch their arms to show roughly 1 metre - For weight, if you have scales, weigh a real pen to show it is only a few grams - Q2 and Q3 are number review, not measuring; warn pupils so they are not thrown - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book

Common sticking points

- Choosing centimetres for the height of a room, since pupils have seen people's height in cm. Point out a room is several metres tall and the number in cm would be huge - Putting "one student" under grams. Ask what unit the school nurse uses when weighing them - Placing 2 × 5 under odd because of the 5, without working out 10 first
