What children will practise

Total coins and notes and work out change by subtracting, in everyday shopping situations: adding and subtracting within 100 in a money context. It matches the money-problems indicator ค 2.1 ป.3/1, which the curriculum places in P3, so here it lays the groundwork.

What's in the worksheet

6 multiple-choice questions - Two 5-baht coins make 10 baht - A 20-baht note and a 10-baht coin make 30 baht - Something costs 35 baht, you pay 50, change is 15 baht - Five 10-baht coins make 50 baht - You have 100 baht and spend 60, leaving 40

How to use it in class

Play after a pretend shop activity, about 6 minutes. In team mode, give each team a set of play coins and notes. - For change questions, have teams handle the money: put down a 50 and count on from 35 to 50 - If many miss 35 from 50, model how a shopkeeper counts up: 40, 50, then total the coins handed back - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book

Common sticking points

- Choosing 20 or 10 for change from 50 on a 35-baht item, from a borrowing slip. Count up from 35 in fives - Choosing 7 for two 5-baht coins, adding the number of coins to the value. Lay out real coins and count 5, 10 - Choosing 50 for 100 - 60 by guessing half is left
