Before you play
Spot number patterns: the square numbers 1, 4, 9, 16, counting on in 12s, ordering decimals from largest to smallest, and putting the steps for turning a fraction into a percentage in order.
4 ordering rounds of 4 cards - Square numbers smallest first: 1, 4, 9, 16 - Going up in 12s: 12, 24, 36, 48 - Decimals largest first: 0.9, 0.75, 0.5, 0.25 - Fraction to percentage: divide the top by the bottom, get a decimal, multiply by 100, add the per cent sign
Use at the start of a lesson on patterns; about 4 minutes. - Play as a class on the projector; for round 1, have children draw dot squares of 1, 2 × 2, 3 × 3 and 4 × 4 to see why they are called square numbers - Warn before round 3 that it runs largest first, unlike the others - After round 4, try it together with 3/4 - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.
- Round 3: children order smallest first out of habit, as every other round does - Round 3: 0.75 may be placed before 0.9 because 75 is more than 9 - Rounds 1 and 2 are just ascending numbers, so children can order them without seeing the pattern
