An AR classroom game for Grade 6. Learners can aim with their hands at the camera or play by tapping the screen.

This set has 6 questions in an interactive multiple choice activity.

A look before you play

Sample questions

A few real prompts from the game to help you choose an activity for your class.

  1. If x + 5 = 12, what is x?

    • 7
    • 17
    • 5
    Read the explanation

Move the five to the other side as a subtraction: twelve take away five is seven.

  2. If x - 4 = 10, what is x?

    • 6
    • 14
    • 40
    Read the explanation

Move the minus four across as an addition: ten plus four is fourteen.

  3. If 3x = 21, what is x?

    • 18
    • 6
    • 7
    Read the explanation

Divide both sides by three: twenty-one divided by three is seven.

What children will practise

Solve simple one-variable equations by doing the inverse operation for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, plus a two-step equation such as 2x + 1 = 9.

What's in the worksheet

6 questions, multiple choice with 3 options - x + 5 = 12 (x = 7) - x - 4 = 10 (x = 14) - 3x = 21 (x = 7) - x ÷ 2 = 8 (x = 16) - 2x + 1 = 9 (x = 4) - x + x = 14 (x = 7)

How to use it in class

Use after teaching equations with a balance model; about 5-6 minutes. - Play in teams and have teams check by substituting x back in - If many miss Q2 or Q4, draw a balance and ask what must be done to both sides to leave x - Use Q6 to discuss that x + x is 2x - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Q2: subtracting 4 instead of adding gives 6 - Q4: dividing instead of multiplying gives 4 - Q3: subtracting 3 instead of dividing gives 18 - Q5: dividing 9 by 2 before taking 1 away, or forgetting to divide and choosing 8
