This set has 4 rounds in an interactive sorting activity.

A look before you play
A few real prompts from the game to help you choose an activity for your class.
Sort into
Different materials have different properties, so each is used for different things.
Sort into
A solid keeps its shape; a liquid flows and takes the shape of its container.
Sort into
Some materials are transparent and some are opaque.
Before you play
Groups materials by observable properties: wood or metal, solid or liquid, see-through or not, stretchy or rigid. Matches ว 2.1 ป.1/1 (observable properties of materials) and ป.1/2 (grouping materials by property).
4 questions, a sorting game with four items each - A wooden table and a pencil are wood; a stainless steel spoon and scissors are metal - A rock and a coin are solid; water and oil are liquid - Clear glass and clear water are see-through; a wooden plank and iron are not - A rubber band and a sponge are stretchy; glass and a brick are rigid
Best after a hands-on session with real materials, about 5-6 minutes. Put a basket of real items out (rubber bands, a spoon, a pencil) and let children handle them first. Play in teams. After question 4, have them stretch a rubber band and squeeze a sponge. On question 1 you may need to say that many scissors have plastic handles but metal blades. You can link it to a class and record it in the gradebook.
- Question 1: unsure about the scissors because school scissors have plastic handles. Point to the blades. - Question 2: calling oil solid, having seen lard set hard. Explain that cooking oil pours. - Question 3: putting clear water with not see-through, not thinking of water as a material. Look through a glass of water together. - Question 1: a pencil has a lead that is not wood, and scissors have plastic handles. If a child notices that one object uses several materials, praise the observation and explain that the game sorts by the main material. - Question 4: a sponge squashes and springs back rather than stretching like a rubber band. Explain that the stretchy group means things that bend, squash or stretch and then return to shape.
