What children will practise

Sort numbers into even and odd and into less or greater than 5, find additions that make 10, and count the parts or legs of everyday things.

What's in the worksheet

4 rounds, a sorting game with 4 items each - 2 and 8 are even; 5 and 7 are odd - 2 and 4 are less than 5; 9 and 7 are greater - 6 + 4 and 7 + 3 make 10; 3 + 3 and 2 + 5 do not - A person's hands and eyes come in twos; a table and a dog have four legs

How to use it in class

Use to review several Grade 1 topics in one go. 5-6 minutes. - Play in teams; for round 4, count the legs of a real classroom table - For round 3, teams write each sum's answer on a mini whiteboard before dragging - If many miss round 1, use children's shoes: if every one has a partner, the number is even - Play it linked to a class and the scores go into the class gradebook.

Common sticking points

- In round 2, children may ask where 5 would go; it is not in the set, but explain it is neither less than nor greater than 5 - In round 1, calling 7 even before it is secure - In round 3, putting 2 + 5 under makes 10 after a counting slip
