What children will practise

Review adding and subtracting within 10, including subtracting to zero, and use the link between addition and subtraction to check answers.

What's in the worksheet

6 questions, multiple choice with 3 options each, 3 additions and 3 subtractions - 8 - 3 = 5 - 10 - 7 = 3 (because 7 + 3 = 10) - 7 - 7 = 0 - 3 + 6 = 9 - 2 + 8 = 10

How to use it in class

Use as a quick warm-up after subtraction has been taught. 4-5 minutes. - Play solo, then check the gradebook for children who miss only the subtractions - For question 3, check by adding back: does 3 + 7 make 10? - If many mix up the signs, circle + and - in different colours before working - Play it linked to a class and the scores go into the class gradebook.

Common sticking points

- In questions 1 and 3, adding instead of subtracting because the set alternates operations; the sums are not offered, so these children usually pick the nearest option - In question 5, choosing 7, thinking taking a number from itself leaves it unchanged - In question 1, answering 6 by counting 8 itself when counting back
