Count back four from nine: eight, seven, six, five - five are left.
An even number pairs up exactly - six makes three pairs.
Before you play
Review adding and subtracting within 10, picking out an even number, and finding the number between two others.
6 questions, multiple choice with 3 options each - 6 + 2 = 8 and 2 + 6 = 8 (swapping gives the same answer) - 9 - 4 = 5 - Which is even (7, 5, 6): 6 - Which lies between 6 and 8: 7 - 10 - 5 = 5
Use for review at the end of the Grade 1 addition and subtraction unit. About 5 minutes. - Play solo, then point out that questions 1 and 4 both make 8 even though the numbers swap - For question 3, children pair up 6 counters and see none is left - If many miss question 2, count back 4 steps from 9 together - Play it linked to a class and the scores go into the class gradebook.
- In question 4, not seeing that 2 + 6 matches question 1, counting on from 2 and slipping; teach counting on from the larger number - In question 3, choosing 7 or 5 because even is not yet understood - In question 2, answering 6 by counting 9 itself when counting back
