A look before you play
A few real prompts from the game to help you choose an activity for your class.
Thai coins come in one, two, five and ten baht.
Multiply the value of the coin by how many there are.
Read each numeral the way it is said in Thai.
Before you play
Recognise Thai 1, 2, 5 and 10 baht coins, total several coins of one kind, match number words to numerals, and subtract within 10.
4 rounds, a matching game with 4 pairs each - The two-tone coin with 10 baht; the silver coin with a milled edge with 5 baht - Two 5-baht coins with 10 baht; four 2-baht coins with 8 baht - เจ็ด with 7; เก้า with 9 - 8 - 5 with 3; 10 - 4 with 6
Use with real or play coins. 6-7 minutes. - Give each group a set of real coins before round 1 so children can feel the size, colour and edge - For round 2, count coin by coin, e.g. 2, 4, 6, 8, rather than multiplying - If many miss round 1, compare a real 2-baht coin, which today is gold-coloured, not silver - Play it linked to a class and the scores go into the class gradebook.
- In round 1, today's 2-baht coin is gold-coloured, so children holding real coins cannot find the thin silver one and match by elimination - In round 1, swapping the 1-baht and 5-baht coins, which are both silver - In round 2, matching four 2-baht coins with 6 baht after a slip counting in twos
