What children will practise

Solve addition and subtraction word problems within 10 by interpreting story words such as fly away, share with a friend, wilt or add more, in line with indicator ค 1.1 ป.1/5.

What's in the worksheet

6 questions, multiple choice with 3 options each, 3 additions and 3 subtractions - 6 birds, 2 fly away: 4 left - Mother gives 5 baht, father 5 more: 10 baht - 8 snacks, 3 shared with a friend: 5 left - 4 fish, 4 more added: 8 - 10 flowers, 4 wilt: 6 left

How to use it in class

Use after the first word-problem set, 6 minutes, to practise a wider range of story words. - Play in pairs; partners underline the word that signals add or subtract before answering - For question 6, discuss why wilting means subtracting even though the flowers are still there - If many miss question 4, act it out with real snacks or counters - Play it linked to a class and the scores go into the class gradebook.

Common sticking points

- In question 4, adding instead of subtracting because shared sounds like handing out more; 11 is not offered, so children often pick the nearby 6 - In question 6, unsure whether wilted flowers count as gone - In question 5, choosing 7 by counting on from 4 and repeating the 4
