Fifty-nine sits exactly between them.
Forty-five is four tens and five ones.
Compare the tens first - eighty-nine has the most.
Before you play
Read and understand place value in numbers up to 100: the number before, the number between, the largest of three, and that 99 + 1 = 100 (indicator ค 1.1 ป.2/1).
6 multiple-choice questions - Which number lies between 58 and 60? 59 - How many tens and ones are in 45? 4 tens and 5 ones - Which is largest: 87, 78 or 89? 89 - Which number comes just before 40? 39 - 99 + 1 = ? 100, with 991 as a distractor
Use at the start of the numbers-to-1,000 unit to check the basics up to 100, about 5 minutes, solo mode. - Keep a hundred square beside the screen; for 58-60 and the number before 40, point to it - For 99 + 1, count on past the last row to reach 100 - If many pick 5 tens 4 ones, build 45 with tens rods and unit cubes - The on-screen explanation for the largest-number question says 89 has the most tens, which is wrong: 87 and 89 both have 8 tens. Point out that the ones decide it, 9 is more than 7 - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book
- In 99 + 1, choosing 991 by writing the 1 on the end. Work it on a hundred square or exchange ones for a ten - For 45, choosing 5 tens 4 ones by reading the digits backwards. Stress that the first digit is the tens - For the largest number, 87 and 89 share the same tens; some stop there and pick 87. Teach that when tens are equal you compare the ones
