A look before you play
A few real prompts from the game to help you choose an activity for your class.
A school ruler is about thirty centimetres long.
One metre is one hundred centimetres.
A door is about two metres tall.
Before you play
Estimate the length of real objects in centimetres or metres, know that 1 metre = 100 centimetres, and compare lengths (indicator ค 2.1 ป.2/2).
6 multiple-choice questions - A school ruler is about 30 cm long; distractors 300 cm and 3 cm - 1 metre is 100 centimetres - A door is about 2 metres tall - 50 cm + 50 cm = 1 metre - 2 metres is 200 centimetres
Use after pupils have measured real things with rulers and metre sticks, about 6 minutes, solo mode. - For the door, have pupils look at the classroom door and compare it with two metre sticks end to end - For 50 cm + 50 cm, lay two half-metre rulers beside a metre stick - If many answer 1000 for 1 metre, count the 10 cm marks on a metre stick up to 100 - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book
- Choosing 20 m for the door, with no mental picture of a metre. Have pupils stand beside a metre stick - Thinking 1 m is 1000 cm, mixing it up with kilometres or millimetres. Stress that "centi" means one hundredth - Choosing 100 m for 50 cm + 50 cm, adding the numbers but not converting the unit
