Simple fractions

An AR classroom game for Grade 3. Learners can aim with their hands at the camera or play by tapping the screen.

This set has 4 rounds in an interactive sorting activity.

A look before you play

Sample questions

A few real prompts from the game to help you choose an activity for your class.

  1. Sort the fractions into groups.

    Sort into

    • less than 1
    • equal to 1
    • 1/2
    • 3/3
    • 2/5
    • 4/4
    Read the explanation

Compare with one: if the top number is smaller than the bottom, the fraction is less than one.

  2. Sort the numbers into groups.

    Sort into

    • in the 2 times table
    • in the 5 times table
    • 8
    • 25
    • 14
    • 35
    Read the explanation

The two times table gives even numbers; the five times table ends in zero or five.

  3. Sort the sums into groups.

    Sort into

    • use multiplication
    • use division
    • 3 boxes of 5 - how many altogether?
    • 15 shared between 3 boxes - how many in each?
    • 4 rows of 6 people - how many altogether?
    • 24 people in 4 equal rows - how many in each?
    Read the explanation

"Shared equally" means divide; "so many equal groups" means multiply.

What children will practise

Compare fractions with 1, deciding whether each is less than or equal to 1 (indicator ค 1.1 ป.3/3), with review of the 2 and 5 tables, choosing multiply or divide, and symmetry (ค 2.2 ป.3/1).

What's in the worksheet

4 sorting questions with 2 boxes each - 1/2 and 2/5 are less than 1; 3/3 and 4/4 equal 1 - 8 and 14 are in the 2 times table; 25 and 35 in the 5 times table - "3 boxes of 5" uses multiplication; "15 shared between 3 boxes" uses division - Circle and square are symmetrical; a footprint and the letter F are not

How to use it in class

Use after an introduction to fractions, about 6 minutes, team mode. Have paper circles folded into parts ready. - For fractions, shade 3 of 3 parts to show the whole sheet is 1 - For symmetry, cut out a letter F and try folding it both ways - Q2 and Q3 are not about fractions; mention it beforehand - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book

Common sticking points

- Putting 3/3 and 4/4 under "less than 1", believing every fraction is less than one. Shade real paper - Thinking 2/5 is big because its numbers are bigger; here pupils only need to see the top number is smaller than the bottom - Calling the footprint symmetrical by thinking of a left and right pair. One footprint folded does not match
