A look before you play

Seven times eight makes fifty-six.
Six times nine makes fifty-four.
Before you play
Recall the 6 and 7 times tables accurately (indicator ค 1.1 ป.3/6), telling apart close products such as 42, 48, 49, 54 and 56.
6 multiple-choice questions - 6 × 7 = 42, distractors 48 and 36 - 7 × 8 = 56 and 7 × 7 = 49 - 6 × 9 = 54 and 7 × 9 = 63 - 6 × 6 = 36
Use while practising the 6 and 7 tables: replay on several days, 3-4 minutes each, timed solo mode. - Most distractors are neighbouring products, such as 48 and 36 for 6 × 7. After revealing, ask "48 is 6 times what?" - The on-screen explanation for 6 × 7 calls it the fact people get wrong most often; that is unsupported, so do not repeat it - Teach the strategy 6 × 7 = 5 × 7 + 7 = 35 + 7 - Play it linked to the class and check in the mark book whether scores rise over several days
- Choosing 54 for 7 × 8, confusing it with 6 × 9. Use the 5, 6, 7, 8 pattern: 56 = 7 × 8 - Choosing 48 or 36 for 6 × 7 by going a row too far or short - Choosing 56 or 42 for 7 × 7, the neighbouring rows
