What children will practise

Recall and use the 8 and 9 times tables (indicator ค 1.1 ป.3/6), including numbers times themselves such as 8 × 8 and 9 × 9.

What's in the worksheet

6 multiple-choice questions - 8 × 6 = 48 and 8 × 9 = 72 - 8 × 8 = 64 - 9 × 4 = 36 and 9 × 5 = 45 - 9 × 9 = 81, distractors 90 and 72

How to use it in class

Use after teaching the 8 and 9 tables, about 4 minutes, solo mode. - Teach the finger trick for nines first, or notice that the digits of 9-times answers add to 9: 36, 45, 72, 81 - In 9 × 5 the distractor 54 is the answer 45 with its digits reversed; let pupils notice - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book

Common sticking points

- Choosing 72 for 9 × 9 or 81 for 8 × 9, the two facts that sit next to each other. Use 9 × 10 = 90 minus 9 = 81 - Choosing 54 for 9 × 5 by reversing the digits. Check: 9 × 5 is counting in fives nine times, ending in 5 - Choosing 54 or 42 for 8 × 6, mixing it with 6 × 9 and 6 × 7
