A look before you play
A few real prompts from the game to help you choose an activity for your class.
Three times five is fifteen, with two left over.
Four times six is twenty-four, with one left over.
Seven times four is twenty-eight, with two left over.
Before you play
Divide with remainders, giving both quotient and remainder, and understand that the remainder must always be smaller than the divisor (indicator ค 1.1 ป.4/9).
6 multiple-choice questions - 17 ÷ 3 is 5 remainder 2; distractor 4 remainder 5 - 25 ÷ 4 is 6 remainder 1 - 40 ÷ 6 is 6 remainder 4; distractor 5 remainder 10 - 23 snacks shared between 5 people: 3 left over - A remainder must be smaller than the divisor
Use after teaching remainders, about 6 minutes, team mode. The last item states the key rule; play to the end, then use it to check the earlier answers. - After Q6, have teams look back at distractors such as 4 remainder 5 and 5 remainder 10 and say why they are wrong - For 23 snacks, teams share real counters into 5 piles - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book
- Picking distractors with a remainder bigger than the divisor, such as 4 remainder 5 for 17 ÷ 3 or 5 remainder 10 for 40 ÷ 6, before learning the rule - Choosing remainder 3 or 1 for 30 ÷ 7 after misremembering 7 × 4 = 28 - For 23 snacks, answering 4 (each person's share) instead of the leftover. Underline "left over"
