What children will practise

Sort shapes with and without parallel sides (linked to parallel lines in ค 2.2 ป.5/1), numbers that are powers of 2, percentage versus fraction problems, and units of angle versus time.

What's in the worksheet

4 sorting rounds, dragging 4 cards into 2 groups - Has parallel sides or not: rectangle, triangle, trapezium, circle - A power of 2 or not: 8, 12, 16, 20 - Percentage or fraction problem: 20% off, 1/4 eaten, scored 80%, 2/3 left - Measures angle or time: degree, minute, right angle, hour

How to use it in class

Use to close the parallel lines and quadrilaterals unit or as an end-of-term review; about 4 minutes. - Play on the projector as a class; for round 1 have children hold two rulers parallel to show parallel sides - If round 2 goes badly, write 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 by doubling on the board and replay - In round 4, note that in this game minute means time - Some items extend beyond primary indicators. Use them for discussion or preparation for Grade 7, not to judge attainment - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Round 2: 12 and 20 may go in the powers-of-2 group because they are even; keep doubling to see whether 12 or 20 appears - Round 1: the trapezium may go in the no-parallel group because its sides slope; one pair of parallel sides is enough - Round 4: right angle is the name of an angle, not a unit, so some children will hesitate over it
