A look before you play
A few real prompts from the game to help you choose an activity for your class.
Twelve times twelve makes one hundred and forty-four.
Fifteen times fifteen makes two hundred and twenty-five.
Eight times twelve makes ninety-six.
Before you play
Practise long division by one- and two-digit divisors, check answers by multiplying back, and find the remainder when division is not exact.
6 questions, multiple choice with 3 options - 144 ÷ 12 (12) - 225 ÷ 15 (15) - 96 ÷ 8 (12) - Remainder of 17 ÷ 5 (2) - 50 ÷ 7, answer and remainder (7 remainder 1)
Use as a warm-up before division word problems; about 6-8 minutes because it needs paper working. - Play in teams, each with a mini whiteboard for setting out the division - After Q6, ask why 6 remainder 8 is impossible, to stress that the remainder must be smaller than the divisor - If many miss Q2, multiply the options back together, e.g. 15 × 15 - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.
- Q6: children unsure about remainders may pick 6 remainder 8, since 6 × 7 + 8 really is 50; stress the remainder must be less than 7 - Q5: some answer 3, mixing up quotient and remainder - Q2: two-digit divisors make estimating the quotient harder, so children guess 12 or 18
