What children will practise

Convert between improper fractions and mixed numbers, say what a mixed number is, and do simple mixed-number addition and subtraction as in ค 1.1 ป.5/3.

What's in the worksheet

6 questions, multiple choice with 3 options - 7/2 as a mixed number (3 1/2) - 2 1/4 as an improper fraction (9/4) - 1 1/2 + 1/2 (2) - 3 - 1 1/2 (1 1/2) - What a mixed number is (a whole number and a fraction)

How to use it in class

Use after teaching conversion between improper fractions and mixed numbers; about 5 minutes. - Either start with Q6 on meaning, or play in order and discuss Q6 at the end - Use half-pizza drawings on the board for Q1 and Q3 - If many miss Q2, teach (whole × denominator) + numerator and try 2 1/4 together - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Q2: children multiply 2 × 4 and forget to add 1, or choose 7/4; use (2 × 4) + 1 = 9 - Q5: 3 - 1 1/2 may come out as 2 1/2, subtracting only the whole number - Q4: 5/4 may become 1 1/5 by using the wrong denominator
