A look before you play
A few real prompts from the game to help you choose an activity for your class.
From 08:45 to 10:45 is two hours; go back thirty minutes and it is one hour thirty.
Three times sixty is a hundred and eighty, plus forty-five makes two hundred and twenty-five.
A hundred and twenty minutes is two hours, with thirty minutes left.
Before you play
Find the time between two clock times, work out an arrival time from a departure time and journey length, and convert between days, hours, minutes and seconds.
6 questions, multiple choice with 3 options - How long from 08:45 to 10:15 (1 hr 30 min) - 3 hours 45 minutes in minutes (225) - A bus leaves at 09:20 and takes 2 hours 50 minutes; when does it arrive (12:10) - Minutes in a day (1440) - Seconds in half an hour (1800)
Use with a lesson on reading bus or school timetables; about 6-7 minutes. - Play in teams with a model clock or a time line on the board - For Q1 and Q4, teach counting on to the next whole hour first, e.g. 09:20 to 10:00 is 40 minutes - If many miss Q4, point out that 11:70 does not exist; 60 minutes must be carried as 1 hour - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.
- Q1: subtracting 10:15 - 08:45 like a decimal gives 1 hr 70 min, which is offered, because children borrow 100 instead of 60 - Q4: adding the minutes gives 70 with no carry, leading to 11:10 or 12:20 - Q2: 3 × 60 then forgetting the 45, or adding wrongly to get 195 - Q5: not halving the hour first leads to 3600, the seconds in a whole hour
