  2. A cube with edges of 2 - what is its volume?

    • 6
    • 8
    • 4
    Read the explanation

Two times two times two makes eight.

  3. How many millilitres are in 1 litre?

What children will practise

Find the volume of cuboids and cubes, convert litres and millilitres, recognise a unit of volume, and work back from volume to height, following ค 2.1 ป.5/3.

What's in the worksheet

6 questions, multiple choice with 3 options - Volume of a box 3 by 4 by 5 (60) - Volume of a cube with edges of 2 (8) - Four 500 ml bottles in litres (2) - Which is a unit of volume (cubic metre) - A box of volume 24, 2 wide and 3 long: how tall (4)

How to use it in class

Use after children have built boxes from unit cubes; about 5-6 minutes. - Play solo or in pairs, with a real 500 ml bottle to show for Q4 - Use Q6 to discuss finding height from the base area - If many miss Q2, build 2 × 2 × 2 blocks and count 8 - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Q2: children often answer 6 (2 + 2 + 2) or 4 (2 × 2) for a cube of edge 2 - Q1: 12 or 20 from multiplying only two edges - Q3: zeros miscounted, giving 10000 or 100 - Q6: 6 chosen by stopping at 2 × 3
