Sample questions

A few real prompts from the game to help you choose an activity for your class.

  1. Match each sum to its answer.

    • -5 + 3
    • -4 - 3
    • 6 - 9
    • -2 + 8
    Read the explanation

    Common calculations with negative numbers.

  2. Match each fraction multiplication to its answer.

    • 1/2 × 1/2
    • 1/3 × 1/2
    • 2/3 × 1/2
    • 2/5 × 1/2
    Read the explanation

Multiply top by top and bottom by bottom, then simplify.

  3. Match each formula to what it finds.

    • distance ÷ time
    • speed × time
    • total ÷ count
    • largest - smallest
    Read the explanation

Knowing what each formula finds is what lets you pick the right one.

What children will practise

Add and subtract negative integers, multiply fractions by 1/2, match formulas to what they find (speed, distance, mean, range), and match numbers to their square roots.

What's in the worksheet

4 matching rounds of 4 pairs each - Negative integers: -5 + 3 with -2, -4 - 3 with -7, 6 - 9 with -3, -2 + 8 with 6 - Fraction products: 1/3 × 1/2 with 1/6, 2/3 × 1/2 with 1/3 - Formula to what it finds: distance ÷ time with speed, total ÷ count with mean - Square roots: 36 with 6, 64 with 8

How to use it in class

Use as a slightly beyond-syllabus review for a class heading to ม.1; about 5 minutes. - Play in teams with a number line on the board for round 1 - In round 3, have teams say each formula as a sentence, e.g. speed is distance divided by time - If round 2 goes badly, point out that multiplying by 1/2 means halving - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Round 1: -4 - 3 worked out as -1, then wrongly paired with -2 or -3 - Round 3: distance ÷ time and speed × time swapped because both mention time - Round 2: 1/3 × 1/2 and 2/3 × 1/2 get swapped by children who look only at the denominators; multiply the tops too
