Sample questions

A few real prompts from the game to help you choose an activity for your class.

  1. What is the ratio 2 : 4 in its simplest form?

    • 1 : 2
    • 2 : 2
    • 1 : 4
    Read the explanation

Divide both sides by two to get one to two - simplify a ratio by dividing by the highest common factor.

  2. If 3 : 5 = 6 : x, what is x?

    • 8
    • 10
    • 12
    Read the explanation

Three times two is six, so the other side is multiplied by two too: five times two is ten.

  3. 120 baht shared in the ratio 1 : 2 - how much does the second person get?

    • 40
    • 60
    • 80
    Read the explanation

Three shares in all, so one share is forty baht; the second person gets two shares - eighty baht.

What children will practise

Write ratios in simplest form, find equivalent ratios (ค 1.1 ป.6/3), share money in a ratio, and solve ratio problems such as distance over time and discounts (ค 1.1 ป.6/11).

What's in the worksheet

6 questions, multiple choice with 3 options - 2 : 4 in simplest form (1 : 2) - If 3 : 5 = 6 : x, find x (10) - 120 baht shared 1 : 2: the second share (80) - 12 : 18 in simplest form (2 : 3) - 20% off 250 baht (50)

How to use it in class

Use after teaching equivalent ratios; about 5-6 minutes. - Play in teams; for Q3 draw a bar split into 3 equal parts on the board - If many miss Q2, point out 3 became 6 by multiplying by 2, so 5 must be multiplied by 2 too - After Q5, ask why 6 : 9 is not yet simplest form - Play it linked to the class to record results in the mark book.

Common sticking points

- Q2: adding 3 instead of doubling (3 + 3 = 6, so 5 + 3 = 8) gives 8, which is offered - Q3: halving 120 to 60 because of the 2, or giving 40, the first person's share - Q5: stopping at 6 : 9, which is offered and still simplifies
