Teaching guide

What children will practise

Choose the first letter of eight action verbs from pictures, including the silent w in write, then pick the correct spelling of run, jump, swim and dance.

What's in the worksheet

12 items, 12 points - Part A: circle the first letter in 8 verbs (8 points): _un, _ump, _alk, _wim, _ead, _rite, _ing, _ance - Part B: choose the correct spelling in 4 sets (4 points): rrun / run / ron, jump / jomp / jumpp, swam / swim / swin, dence / dance / danse - Part A key reads r j w s r w s d

How to use it in class

Use once children can say the eight verbs and match them to pictures. Allow about 10 minutes. - Before starting, point out that write sounds as if it starts with r but is written with w - After marking, play charades in pairs: one child mimes, the other writes the verb on a mini whiteboard

Common sticking points

- Choosing r for _rite, because the w in write is silent - Mixing up d and b in _ead and _ance - In Part B, choosing swam, a real word but the past tense, or swin, which sounds similar at the end - In Part B, choosing danse or dence because the c sounds like s
