What children will practise

Match ten pictures to describing adjectives such as big, small, tall, fast, slow, hot, cold, happy and sad, deciding which quality each picture shows.

What's in the worksheet

10 items, 20 points - Word bank A-J: slow, happy, cold, tall, fast, small, sad, hot, short and big; children write the letter under each picture - Six animals (elephant, mouse, giraffe, tortoise, cheetah, snail), two children (one cheering, one crying), a smiling sun and a snowman - All ten words are used once and form five opposite pairs, e.g. big/small, fast/slow, hot/cold - A separate answer key is included

How to use it in class

Use at the start of the adjectives unit, after teaching the words as opposite pairs through actions. Allow about 10 minutes. - Warm up with a mime game: stretch up for tall, crouch for short, and so on - After marking, have children say full sentences such as The elephant is big. The mouse is small. and pair up the pictures that show opposites

Common sticking points

- Item 4, the tortoise, is keyed as short, but many children will choose slow because tortoises are known for being slow, leaving nothing for the snail in item 8 - Confusing short with small, since Thai learners often use the same everyday word for both - Choosing happy for the smiling sun in item 9 instead of hot
