What children will practise

Write describing adjectives from memory for ten labelled points in a theme-park scene, then choose one adjective of their own to draw and use in a sentence.

What's in the worksheet

Two parts, 20 points - Part A: write the word for 10 arrowed points in the picture (10 points), with no word bank; the key gives big, small, tall, short, happy, sad, fast, slow, hot and cold - The scene includes an elephant, a mouse, a giraffe, a tortoise, two children, a roller coaster, a snail, the sun and a snowman - Part B: draw a picture, then fill in My adjective: and Sentence: (10 points) - The key gives a single model for Part B: happy / I am happy.

How to use it in class

Use at the end of the unit, once children can match adjectives from a word bank, since here they recall the words unaided. Allow about 20 minutes. - Before starting, run a quick opposites drill: the teacher says hot, the class answers cold, until all ten words have come up - For Part B, let children show their drawing and have classmates guess the adjective before the writer reads out the sentence

Common sticking points

- Item 4, the tortoise, is keyed as short; most children will write slow and then use slow again for the snail in item 8 - The arrow for item 7 points towards the roller coaster rather than the cheetah, so children may be unsure what to describe, although fast fits both - In Part B, writing a single word, or leaving out the capital letter and full stop - Spelling happy as hapy
