Curriculum indicators practised
Before you begin
Match ten action pictures to -ly adverbs that describe how something is done, such as quickly, slowly, quietly, loudly, carefully and messily.
10 items, 2 points each, 20 points in total - Word bank A-J: quietly, carefully, slowly, sadly, neatly, loudly, messily, quickly, angrily and happily - Several pictures carry clues: a QUIET PLEASE sign in the library, a KEEP IT NEAT sign by the bookshelf, musical notes round the drum - A girl carrying a vase of tulips (carefully), a boy stamping his foot (angrily), a girl splattered with paint (messily) - A separate answer key gives the letters in the circles
Use after showing how -ly turns an adjective into an adverb, e.g. quick to quickly. Allow about 10 minutes. - Warm up with an 'in the manner of the word' game: the teacher says walk slowly or walk angrily and the class acts it out - After marking, ask children to describe each picture in a sentence, e.g. The boy runs quickly. The girl reads quietly.
- Item 4 (laughing drummer) and item 10 (grinning painter) both look happy, so children may write happily instead of loudly and messily - Item 5 (girl jumping for joy) is the keyed happily; if the word was spent earlier, the remaining matches go wrong - Mixing up quietly and neatly in items 3 and 9 when the signs in the pictures are not read
