Teaching guide

What children will practise

Put three or four word cards in order to make a sentence about a routine, placing the frequency adverb between the subject and the verb, e.g. Ben often reads books.

What's in the worksheet

10 items, 2 points each, 20 points in total - Cards are jumbled, e.g. brushes her teeth. / always / Mia and usually / to school. / Tom / walks - The adverb is already on a card, so no chart reading is needed: always, usually, often, sometimes and never each appear twice - The final card carries the full stop, e.g. drinks coffee. and go to bed late. - The key writes out full sentences, e.g. Leo never drinks coffee. and We always wear helmets when cycling.

How to use it in class

Use as the third sheet in the set, once children can choose and write the adverbs, to focus on word order. Allow about 10-15 minutes. - Before starting, write subject + adverb + verb on the board and have children point to the subject card in each item - After marking, ask children to change the adverb so the sentence is true for them, e.g. I sometimes play chess., and read it to a partner

Common sticking points

- Placing the adverb after the verb, e.g. Tom walks usually to school., because Thai often puts frequency words at the end - Starting with the adverb, e.g. Always Mia brushes her teeth., which is not the pattern being practised - Item 6 splits wear helmets and when cycling. onto two cards, so some children put when cycling first
