What children will practise

Spell -ly adverbs accurately: first by choosing the opening letter, then by picking the correct form from near-misses with a letter too many or too few, such as happily and happilly.

What's in the worksheet

10 items, 2 points each, 20 points in total - Part A: choose the first letter for 6 words (12 points): _uickly, _lowly, _uietly, _oudly, _appily and _adly, from three letters each - For _uickly and _uietly the choices are q, b and p, which look alike - Part B: pick the correct spelling in 4 items (8 points): quitetly / quietly / quietlly, carefuly / carefullly / carefully, happily / hapily / happilly, angriley / angrily / angrely - A separate answer key outlines each answer in red

How to use it in class

Use after the picture-matching sheet, when children know the meanings but are not yet sure of the spelling. Allow about 10-15 minutes. - Before Part B, write happy, angry and careful on the board and ask which change y to i and which simply add -ly - After marking, have children copy each wrong option from Part B and circle exactly where it goes wrong

Common sticking points

- Part A items 1 and 3: confusing q with p or b, which are mirror shapes - Part B item 2: choosing carefuly, not realising careful already ends in l, so adding -ly gives a double l - Part B items 3 and 4: choosing hapily or angriley, forgetting the rule of changing y to i before -ly - Part B item 1: choosing quitetly through confusion with quite
