What children will practise

Look at ten action pictures and write each -ly adverb in full with no word bank, from quickly and slowly up to harder words such as carefully and messily.

What's in the worksheet

10 items, 2 points each, 20 points in total - Write the adverb under each picture with no options or letter hints - Key answers in order: quickly, slowly, quietly, loudly, happily, sadly, carefully, angrily, neatly and messily - The pictures are the same as on the matching sheet for this topic, including the QUIET PLEASE and KEEP IT NEAT signs that act as clues - A separate answer key writes each word in red

How to use it in class

Use at the end of the unit, after the matching and spelling sheets, to check that children can recall the words unaided. Allow about 15 minutes. - Before starting, have children say the adjective for each picture aloud (quick, sad, angry) and add -ly only when they write - After marking, play charades: a child draws a card such as carefully and mimes carrying something so classmates can guess

Common sticking points

- Writing the adjective instead of the adverb, e.g. sad, angry or happy with no -ly - Spelling happily and angrily as happyly or angryly, without changing y to i - Item 10: messily is the least familiar word, and children may write messly - Items 4 and 10 show laughing children, which invites happily
