What's in the worksheet

10 items, 20 points - Four age questions, e.g. How old are you? I am ___ years old. and How old is Mina? She is ___ years old. - Four counting items (pencils, stars, books, cookies), e.g. How many stars? There are ___ stars. - Two numeral-reading items, 5 and 7, in It is number ___. - Each item offers three number words between two and ten; there is a Let's reflect face to colour and a separate answer key

How to use it in class

Use once children can count to ten and say I am ... years old. Allow about 10 minutes. - The four age items give no clue in the picture, so either tell the class each character's age first or accept any option read aloud correctly - For item 7, accept ten after counting the two stacks of five books, although it is absent from the options and the printed key says eight - After marking, pair children to ask How old are you? and How many pencils do you have? using real objects on their desks

Common sticking points

- Item 7 shows two stacks of five books, ten in all, but the key says eight, so a child who counts correctly finds no matching option - Item 10 shows a cake with one candle; nothing points to the keyed seven - In items 4 and 8, treating What number is this? like How many? and counting fingers instead of reading the numeral - Mixing up seven and six, or four and five, which start with the same letter
