Teaching guide

What children will practise

Copy eight words from the bank under the right pictures and add the bank letter, then write the first letter of queen, lamp, mouse and duck without any options.

What's in the worksheet

12 items, 20 points - Word bank A-H: mouse, ring, book, frog, queen, egg, lamp, duck - Part A: write the word and its letter for 8 pictures (16 points), e.g. a blue book, a diamond ring, an egg, a crowned queen - Part B: write the missing first letter in _ueen, _amp, _ouse and _uck (4 points) - Part A key: book C, frog D, ring B, duck H, mouse A, egg F, queen E, lamp G

How to use it in class

Use after a picture-word matching sheet in the alphabet unit, as here children write whole words. Allow about 15 minutes. - Before starting, agree that the small box takes the letter A-H and the long line takes the word - In Part B, have children say the whole word before writing, then think of other words with the same first sound, such as lion and lemon

Common sticking points

- Writing only the letter A-H or only the word, losing marks in Part A - Writing k or c for _ueen because the word starts with a /k/ sound - Calling picture 5 a rat instead of a mouse - Dropping a letter when copying from the bank, e.g. eg for egg
