Curriculum indicators practised
Before you begin
Find and draw a line of symmetry on flat shapes, using the grid to split each shape into two matching halves.
5 shapes, 20 points - Draw one line of symmetry on each: a square, a triangle, a circle, a rectangle and a heart - Each shape sits on squared paper, so children can count squares to find the middle - The answer key shows a vertical line through the middle of every shape
Use after children have folded paper shapes so the halves match exactly. Allow about 10 minutes. - Have children cut out a heart and a rectangle and fold them to test the line they drew - Mark by an actual fold and accept every line that makes the shape coincide, including a horizontal line on a symmetric shape even if the key shows only one line - Extend by asking how many lines of symmetry a square has
- Drawing a diagonal on the rectangle: it makes two equal halves, but they do not match when folded - Drawing the line slightly off-centre by not counting the grid squares - Drawing a horizontal line across the heart, which is not a line of symmetry
