Curriculum indicators practised
Before you begin
Read a centimetre ruler and find length as end mark minus start mark, both when an object starts at 0 and when it does not.
10 questions, 20 points (plus an unscored example, 0 to 4 cm) - Each item has three blanks: start, end and length - Questions 1-6 start at 0, e.g. 5, 8, 12 and 15 cm long - Questions 7-10 do not start at 0: 2 to 9 (7 cm), 4 to 12 (8 cm), 3 to 14 (11 cm), 6 to 15 (9 cm) - A separate answer key is included
Use after children have measured real objects with a ruler. Allow about 15 minutes. - For questions 7-10, have children count the centimetre gaps with a finger to check the subtraction - Follow up by measuring a real pencil or rubber placed deliberately away from the 0 mark
- In questions 7-10, writing the end mark as the length, e.g. 12 cm instead of 8 cm in question 8 - Counting marks rather than spaces, giving a length 1 cm too long - Reading the small millimetre ticks as centimetres where a bar ends near them
