Curriculum indicators practised
Before you begin
Look at a picture and choose a or an by the first sound of the noun, e.g. an apple, an umbrella, a kite, a bus, then pick the correct phrase from pairs such as a egg / an egg.
12 items, 20 points - Part A: circle a or an for 8 pictures (16 points): apple, cat, umbrella, kite, elephant, bus, orange and robot - Part A prints no words, so children must name each picture themselves - Part B: choose the correct phrase in 4 items (4 points): a egg / an egg, a dog / an dog, a ice cream / an ice cream, a book / an book - Six answers are an and six are a; a separate answer key is included
Use as the first a/an sheet, after teaching the vowels a, e, i, o, u. Allow about 10 minutes. - Before starting, have the class name all eight Part A pictures aloud so everyone works with the same word - After marking, hold up classroom objects (an eraser, a pencil) and have children call out the right phrase
- Item 3: a child who calls the umbrella something else, or cannot name it, will pick a - In items 5-8 the order switches to an before a, so a child who circles the same position each time goes wrong - Part B item 3: picking a ice cream, unsure whether the rule applies to a two-word noun - Item 8: thinking the o inside robot calls for an
