Before you begin
Read the amount of water from a litre scale on a beaker, and compare container capacities from their litre labels.
10 questions, 20 points (plus an unscored example of 2 litres) - Questions 1-5: read the water level on a 0-5 litre scale; answers are 1, 3, 5, 2 and 4 litres - Questions 6-10: write >, < or = between two containers, e.g. a 5-litre and a 3-litre bucket, 4-litre and 5-litre watering cans, two 1-litre jugs - A separate answer key is included
Use after children have poured water with real litre jugs. Allow about 10-15 minutes. - Before questions 1-5, have children point to the mark the water surface touches and read it aloud - Follow up by pouring between two classroom containers to link with questions 6-10
- Reading the wrong line because the scale has half-litre ticks between the numbers - Judging questions 6-10 by how big the picture looks rather than by the label - Writing the sign the wrong way round, e.g. 4 litres > 5 litres in question 9
