Curriculum indicators practised
Before you begin
Match ten classroom situations, such as arriving late, being helped or not knowing an answer, to what you should say: I am sorry., Thank you., I don't know. and so on.
10 items, 20 points - Illustrated response cards A-J: Yes, please. / Thank you. / I am sorry. / Here you are. / Good morning, teacher! / Please sit down. / It is on my desk. / May I come in? / Please be quiet. / I don't know. - Most question cards follow What do you say when...?, e.g. What do you say when you are late? and What does the teacher say in a noisy library? - A Let's reflect box with three written prompts, e.g. Which ones will you use in your classroom? (not scored) - A separate key gives each letter with a tick
Use after the classroom dialogue sheet, to tie each phrase to a situation. Allow about 15 minutes. - Before starting, act out situations (arriving late, handing over a ruler) and let children guess what to say - For item 1, accept Here you are. as the suitable reply to Can I borrow your book?, not Yes, please. from the printed key - The Let's reflect prompts are all in English; most Year 1-3 children will need to answer orally or in Thai
- Item 1, Can I borrow your book?: a child who understands will choose D Here you are., but the key gives A Yes, please., which is not a correct reply to a request to borrow - Item 5, Can I come in?: children look for a reply giving permission, but the key gives H May I come in?, which is the same question again - Items 9 and 10 ask what the teacher says, and children may pick a student's line instead
