Before you begin
Spell ten clothes words by choosing the one missing letter, whether it falls at the start, middle or end of the word, using the picture as a clue.
10 questions, 20 points - Choose the missing letter from three options under each of 10 clothing pictures - Words on the sheet: shirt, shorts, socks, t-shirt, uniform, hat, vest, boots, scarf and dress - Sample items: sho_ts (p/r/n), un_form (e/i/a), boo_s (d/t/k) and _ress (d/b/g) - A separate answer key is included
Use once children can name clothes from pictures and are starting to spell them. Allow about 10 minutes. - Before starting, have children point to their own school uniform and say shirt, shorts, socks and uniform, all of which are on the sheet - After marking, read aloud the words the distractors make, such as cat and bat in _at, to show how one letter changes the meaning
- In _ress the options d and b look alike, so children who still reverse b and d may circle b - In _at the distractors c and b make real words, cat and bat, so children who ignore the hat picture may slip - In un_form children often choose e or a by ear, because the i is unstressed - t-sh_rt and _hirt sit close together, and some children are unsure how a buttoned shirt differs from a t-shirt
