Before you begin

Teaching guide

What children will practise

Write the English word for ten pictures of clothes from memory, with no word bank to copy from.

What's in the worksheet

10 questions, 20 points - Write the word under each picture: jacket, skirt, gloves, trousers, sweater, shoes, belt, cap, shirt and boots - There is no word bank, so children spell every word themselves - shirt and boots are new compared with the matching sheet on the same topic - A separate answer key is included

How to use it in class

Use after the clothes matching sheet. Allow about 15 minutes. - Before writing, have the class spell each word aloud, focusing on shirt and boots, which the earlier sheet did not include - Follow up by asking children to describe what they are wearing today, e.g. I am wearing a white shirt.

Common sticking points

- Children often drop the final s on paired items: glove, shoe, trouser, boot - shirt and skirt differ by one letter and are often swapped - jeans, sneakers, jumper or rain boots are reasonable answers too, so agree the marking rule in advance - sweater is often spelt sweter or swetter
