Before you begin
Compare unit fractions (1/2, 1/3, 1/4) using shaded bars and write >, < or =.
10 questions, 20 points - Each item shows shaded fraction bars to compare, e.g. 1/2 and 1/3, 1/4 and 1/2 - Three answers are >, four are < and three are = (1/3 and 1/3, 1/4 and 1/4, 1/2 and 1/2) - A printed tip reminds children that when the wholes are the same size, fewer parts means bigger parts - A separate answer key is included
Use straight after shading halves, thirds and quarters. Allow about 10 minutes. - Have children fold equal paper strips into 2, 3 and 4 parts and line them up before starting - Follow up orally: one pizza shared by 2 people or by 4, who gets the bigger slice?
- Thinking 1/4 is bigger than 1/3 because 4 is bigger than 3, so questions 8 and 10 come out reversed - Writing the sign the wrong way round, with the open side towards the smaller fraction - Avoiding = on the equal pairs, assuming one side must be bigger
