Teaching guide

What children will practise

Finish seven sentence starters (I can, I like, The ... is, I see a, My bag is, He has a and I am) in their own words using a picture, then write the full sentence.

What's in the worksheet

10 items, 20 points - Starters such as I like ___. (ice cream), The cat is ___. (a sleeping cat), He has a ___. (a boy with a football) and I am ___. (a boy giving a thumbs up) - The instruction says in your own words, so there is no single answer - The key gives sample answers: swim, ice cream, sleepy, kite, blue, read, yellow, ball, fly and happy - Two Full sentence: lines per item and a Let's reflect strip

How to use it in class

Use after the single-answer missing-word sheet, when children are ready to make their own sentences. Allow about 20 minutes. - Before starting, brainstorm several endings for item 3, The cat is... (sleepy, grey, small), so children see that many answers work - After marking, have children rewrite items 1, 2 and 10 so they are true about themselves and read them to a partner

Common sticking points

- Item 8, He has a ___.: He has a football. or He has a blue shirt. are also right, and some children forget the article clash with vowel words - Items 1 and 6: writing swimming or reading after can - Item 2: writing I like ice creams. or I like a ice cream. - Leaving out the capital letter or full stop in the full sentence
