Teaching guide

What children will practise

Order three or four word cards into is + -ing or is + adjective sentences, then finish sentence starters from pictures.

What's in the worksheet

10 items, 20 points - Section A: order the cards and write the full sentence, 5 items (10 points): a / cat / is / reading, is / He / running, red / is / The ball, cake / She / is / eating, sleeping / The dog / is - Section B: finish the starter from the picture, 5 items (10 points): The sun is..., The fish is..., I am..., The bird is..., The car is... - The key's Section B answers are samples: yellow, swimming, happy, flying, blue - A Let's Reflect row of faces closes the page

How to use it in class

Use once children know am / is and a few common -ing verbs. Allow about 15-20 minutes. - Before starting, cut out the item 1 cards and let small groups order them on the desk, then read the sentence together - Section B accepts many answers, so have children read theirs to a partner and collect the different endings on the board, e.g. The sun is hot. / The sun is big.

Common sticking points

- Item 1: copying the card as a cat is reading without capitalising a, since the card is lower case - Leaving out the full stop or starting with a small letter - Item 4: placing cake before the verb, as in She is cake eating - Section B: writing just yellow instead of the full sentence the instruction asks for
