What children will practise

Look at the picture and write one word to finish three short sentence frames, I see a ___. / ... can ___. / ... is ___., choosing a noun, a verb or a colour to fit the frame.

What's in the worksheet

10 sentences, 20 points (one section) - can + verb four times: The dog can run. / I can read. / The bird can fly. / The fish can swim. - is + colour four times: The apple is red. / The ball is blue. / The sun is yellow. / The tree is green. - Two others: I see a cat. and I am happy. - Each item has a spare ruled line, and a Let's Reflect smiley-face self-check closes the page - The key writes answers in green with ticks

How to use it in class

Use with Year 1-2 children who already know simple animal, colour and action words. Allow about 10-15 minutes. - Before starting, read the three frames together and ask what kind of word follows can (an action) and is (here, a colour) - Use the spare line under each item for copying the full sentence, or let fast finishers write a new one, e.g. The cat can jump.

Common sticking points

- Writing I see a cats in item 1, or kitten, which is also acceptable - Writing a noun after is in items 2, 4, 6 and 10, e.g. The apple is apple, not realising is needs a describing word - Writing I am boy (without a) in item 8 instead of happy - In item 10 the tree is green and brown, so children may write brown or big
