What children will practise

Look at market food pictures and choose a, an or some before the noun, telling apart one item, several items and uncountable things such as milk, water, cheese and juice.

What's in the worksheet

10 questions, 2 points each, 20 points (one part, Part A) - Each item offers three of a, an, some and any, e.g. There is ___ milk. (some / a / any) - Four uncountable nouns (milk, water, cheese, juice) and four plurals (apples, eggs, cookies, carrots) - Only two singular items: I have a banana. and She has an orange. - The key gives each full sentence plus the option letter: B A B B C B B C A C

How to use it in class

Use as the first sheet on this topic, once countable and uncountable nouns have been introduced. Allow about 10 minutes. - Before starting, have children sort the ten pictures into three piles: one item, several items, and liquids or things we cut up - After marking, ask questions such as Is there any milk? so children hear where any does belong, since it is never the answer on this sheet

Common sticking points

- any is offered in every item, so children who remember any goes with uncountables and plurals may pick it in a positive sentence, e.g. There are any apples. - In items 2, 5, 8 and 10 children may choose a because the picture shows one bottle, one jug, one wedge or one glass - In item 6 children may pick a orange without listening for the vowel sound
