What children will practise

Match eight countries to their nationality words in a lettered bank A-H, using flags and landmarks as clues, then choose the right nationality from three options.

What's in the worksheet

12 items, 20 points - Word bank A-H: Spanish, Thai, Italian, Brazilian, Japanese, Chinese, Australian, French - Section A: write the letter for 8 countries (16 points), each with its flag and a landmark such as a Thai temple, the Colosseum or the Sagrada Familia - Section B: choose the nationality for Japan, Brazil, France and China (4 points) - Key: B E F H C G D A, then Japanese, Brazilian, French and Chinese

How to use it in class

Use as the first sheet on this topic, once the country names are known. Allow about 10 minutes. - Before starting, have children group the bank by ending: -ese, -ian, -ish and the odd ones out (Thai, French) - After marking, each child picks a landmark from the sheet and tells a partner, e.g. The Colosseum is in Italy. It is Italian.

Common sticking points

- Mixing up Japanese and Chinese because both end in -ese; Section B items 9 and 12 use each as the other's distractor - In the Brazil item, Spanish is a distractor, and children who link Brazil with Latin America may be tempted by it - Swapping Spanish and Italian, two southern European countries children rarely know well
