What children will practise

Use a country name as the clue to spell and choose the nationality word for seven countries, noticing the -ese, -ian and -ish endings and irregular forms such as Thai and French.

What's in the worksheet

10 questions, 20 points - Section A: add the one missing letter in 5 nationalities (10 points), with a flag and a landmark for each: T_ai, J_panese, Chine_e, Frenc_ and Australia_ - Section B: choose the nationality for Spain, Japan, Australia, Brazil and France from three options (10 points) - Every distractor in Section B is a real nationality, e.g. Brazilian, Italian, Chinese - A separate answer key is included

How to use it in class

Use after teaching I'm from Thailand. I'm Thai. Allow about 10 minutes. - Before starting, have children name each country in English from its flag and landmark - After marking, play a role-play game: children draw a country card and say I'm from Brazil. I'm Brazilian. while a partner repeats the nationality

Common sticking points

- Writing Tai for Thai, because the h is silent - Writing z instead of s in Chinese, because it sounds like a z - In Section B the Brazil item offers Italian, which shares the -ian ending, so children who look only at the ending may slip - Some children assume every nationality takes -ese or -ian and cannot predict Spanish or French
